Desert Botantical Garden
Desert Botantical Garden ~ A Photo Adventure
By: Brenda Beck Today was a day off, so I headed to the Desert Botanical Gardens ~ Phoenix, AZ. It is a beautiful, bright sunny 74 degrees today and a day made for digital photography in the garden landscape. The Gardens are convienently located right next to the Phoenix Zoo, my other favorite location to visit in the Valley. If you have never been to "The Gardens," it is lush botanical high desert garden located in Popago Park. The Garden is 34 acres full of indigenous desert cactus, endangered plant species, succulents, and threatened desert plants from around the world. The pathways are well groomed with easy access for all, including wheelchairs. The desert wildlife seen today included rabbits, chipmunks, quail, hummingbirds, many other birds, and lots of lizards. There was a fat house cat on the property as well. One of the main attractions were the wildflower gardens where you will find a kaleioscope of bright desert blooms and emerging now are the cactus blooms. If you have never seen cactus blooms; they are amazingly intricate, brightly colored and beautifully surround by the protective needles of the cacti. One of my favorite places in the gardens, is the butterfly garden. This garden is beautifully maintained with koi pond, a variety of flowers and trees housed in mesh to keep the butterflies in. There are 100s of butterflies with colors of yellow, orange, blue, black, yellow some with spots on their wings, some without and all flying around you, landing on you, and your neighbor. It is mesmerizing to watch them fly and then land to sip the necter from the flowers. They love the sunny locations in the garden.
